The writer should be part of the company

Theatre is made in a collaborative way. A dominant personality can change the course of the play.

Funding bodies are not investing in writers. Applications can be made for Research and Development funds.

Is the concept of the writer ‘dead’?

Small plays from different communities can be brought together. Universal themes can be tackled.

Stories are everywhere.

TRIONGL write and perform their work and come under Chapter Arts House pilot scheme.

Writers have to be willing to do marketing, advertising and other roles.

Questions

Does theatre in Wales look outwards enough?

Is the role of the writer to find a language for characters that the audience can relate to?

Can the writer find a theme through story that engages his/her passions and will look both inwards and outwards –to the local community and the wider world?

Conclusion

Funding is a major issue. Writers need to be willing to take on various roles. The must be proactive and flexible. Another outlet is through radio. BBC Writers’ Room may have a scheme which covers theatre as well as TV and Radio.

Applying for funding for a company is hard work!
