Hola Creatives,

I'm on the hunt for a Director for my One man show. It's a dark dark comedy along the themes Justice & our attitudes to those "wierdos" on the fringes of society. The show is booked for the Cardiff Comedy Festival in July.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Hello. We are The Other Room, Cardiff’s first pub theatre.

We wouldn’t want to be making work anywhere else in the world right now. The Other Room is a direct response to the overwhelming talent to be found in Cardiff and throughout Wales. Teeming with actors, writers, designers and directors of world-class quality, this city is the perfect place to establish a small producing house that makes bold, cutting edge theatre.

At just 45 seats, The Other Room will produce new work by Welsh or Wales-based artists and great modern plays from 1950 onwards. It is our ambition to be a new, exciting and innovative voice within the cultural landscape of Cardiff.

The Other Room will run a year-round programme producing, curating and commissioning invited companies to make work with us. We will also be launching an emerging artists development programme, ‘The Kitchen’.

We will be announcing our venue on the 27th June and hosting a special event there to thank our supporters and invite them into Cardiff’s newest theatre for the very first time.

After much searching we have found the perfect venue  – a popular and vibrant bar in Cardiff city centre with a room absolutely ideal for a theatre, and we are currently in the design and planning stage to convert the space into a fully working fringe theatre.

We are currently running a Kickstarter campaign in order to raise the seed money that we need to build this theatre. On the first day of our campaign we raised over £1000 and just three days later we hit our target of £2500, allowing us to start the process leading to the conversion. Two weeks later we have doubled that amount, and we want to keep going! We have a tremendous amount of money to raise over the next year and the faith and generosity of our community has given us a great start. In addition to the conversion itself, here are some of the things we are fundraising for:

  • Secure the rights to the exciting plays we have lined up for next season.

  • Commission writers to develop new plays.

  • Secure the creative team for our first season.

  • Match fund other companies we want to support to make work in the space.

  • Commit to minimum ITC and Equity contract rates for all artists.

This money will make it possible for us to support the artists of Wales and pay them what they deserve for the work that they create. That's the sort of theatrical ecology we want to contribute to, and every penny that we are given brings us closer to doing that.

Take a look at our Kickstarter campaign, including our video, here and if you’re inspired by who we are and what we’re about, support us and spread the word.

We’re here, and we’re happening. Please help us to be the best we can be.

For further enquiries and to learn more about the project, please contact our Marketing Officer Ben Atterbury by emailing ben@otherroomtheatre.com or calling 07817 714250.

CALLING COMPOSERS --
I have written a play with music (not a musical) and am seeking to collaborate with a composer.

No, not a musical -- but there is a band within the play. I have written the lyrics and I now need a composer.

If you want more info, please either comment here or sent me a message.

I am planning to submit the play for a production call out (NYC based) -- very soon -- so please get in touch!

Cheers.

Hi all,

We are having a What Next? Conversation at  Hay  this Friday in the BBC tent. Open to the public. Please come!

Friday 23rd May  2.15PM – 3.30PM

The Value of Culture Debate

Alastair Spalding, CEO and Artistic Director of Sadler’s Wells chairs a What Next? conversation on the impact and value of culture, arts and literature in our society. He will be joined by guests including Tony Ageh, Controller, BBC Archives Development, to discuss how we can get the public to appreciate the many different ways art and culture can affect and enhance our lives.

NOT FOR BROADCAST   BBC TENT

How can we work together better across the cultural sector to encourage the people of this country, as individuals and as communities, to see connections between the many different ways art and culture affect and enhance our lives; to urge everyone to register their endorsement of – and pleasure in – their art and culture, especially where these are under threat?

What next? Is a national movement bringing together arts & cultural organisations across the UK to articulate & strengthen the role of culture in our society. We want to engage the public in new & different conversations about the value & impact of arts, literature & culture on all our lives. What kind of society do we want and how do we make that a reality?

Hi Creative People!  We've just announced a new project for Dramaturgs, and we're keen to involve people from a range of disciplines alongside a group of writers.  So if you're someone who feels you know how to help others shape a piece of theatre, do put yourself forward (there's a small but attractive fee involved).  Here's all the info: http://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profiles/blogs/dramaturgs...

Shwmae pawb!

I'm in rehearsals with The Flying Roast Goose at The Blue Elephant Theatre in Camberwell at the moment. It's a piece of puppetry with movement direction from Robin Guiver of Warhorse and Oli Smart of The Little Angel Puppet Company. It'd be great to see you all there!

Performances:3 - 21 June at 8pm
£12 full price
£10 concession
£9 Southwark Residents

Special discount at £8.50 for preview tickets on 3 and 4 June

'A moving story about food, survival, hope and sacrifice told through the eyes of a Cantonese chef and her pet goose set in war-torn Hong Kong during the Japanese occupation. Using physical theatre, puppetry and object manipulation, this original piece tells the dark history of Hong Kong with playfulness and kitchen utensils!'

@John McGrath - thank you so much for your welcome message! It's great to be back and to see that the theatre scene and NTW in particular is so vibrant! I'll certainly get in touch with TEAM and find out some more and I look forward to getting involved in many more projects with NTW.

@james Auheb - welcome back to Wales James, great to hear that you have relocated your company to Pontyridd. Some of the NTW TEAM, led by Terry Chin, have an interesting project coming up in Ponty this autumn - you might want to give them a shout. All the best, John
