Tonight's instant performance at the Sherman (6.30, don't miss it!) with Notional Theatre. Follow the link to hear the poem in Welsh. Or English. Or Chinese. Or be a part of it. It's a 5 minutes, one off performance. http://www.thecasket.co.uk/liu-xiaobo/

Urgently looking for as many actors and writers and other creative types who can commit half an hour for an instant performance at the Sherman Theatre next Tuesday evening. The event is part of a worldwide reading of a poem by Liu Xiaobo, the Chinese poet and Nobel Peace Prize winner who is currently imprisoned. As many actors as possible - the more the mightier. Reply here or e: notional.theatre@yahoo.co.uk. ASAP. Ta TVx

Sherman Cymru are organising a small scale site-specific synposium event to celebrate the last day of Grid Iron's performance Barflies on the 24th March 2012.

The synposium will take place from 2-4pm at Sherman Cymru in the basement rehearsal room. It will be hosted by Judith Doherty, the Producer and Co-Artisitic Director of Grid Iron Theatre Company, and chaired by staff from Sherman Cymru's Creative Learning team.

The synposium invites practitioners of all ages and experiences, from those with mountains of site-specific theatre making experience to those who are just intrigued by the journey that this kind of work can take them on, to attend the event. It is an opportunity to explore the work of different site-specific artists through informal chats and discussions.

This is a FREE event, if you would like to attend please RSVP with your full name to alice.nicholas@shermancymru.co.uk

The Landed Festival (May 5th -6th) in the beautiful Wye Valley near Rhayader is in its second year, having secured a ten year licence. This year they are running a performance tent with a proper auditorium and facilities.  They are looking for people who wish to perform theatre, circus, comedy or who have made short films and would like them shown.  There are no fees, but expect expenses and a great weekend. www.landedfestival.co.uk

The regional Theatre Young Directors Scheme is now accepting applications:

Every year up to three directors will be awarded bursaries enabling them to spend one year based in a UK theatre. The directors will gain experience in all aspects of the theatre's operations and will undertake a programme of training to include assisting on productions.

The purpose of the scheme is to provide exceptional training for the directors and artistic directors of the future. It brings together the most exciting emerging directing talent and the UK's leading regional theatres.

Despite the name of the scheme there is no upper age limit, but applicants need to be at an early stage in their careers. To Find out more go to http://www.rtyds.org/

Hi all,

I thought i'd just drop you guys a quick email to let you know about a children's show coming to Sherman Cymru between 21-24 March, The Forest, which is really interesting for creatives to see.

The Forest maybe aimed at children of 5+ but is an intelligent piece of contemporary dance theatre that combines skilful performance and inventive choreography with an immersive set and specially commissioned soundscape.

This piece of theatre is really interesting to watch from arts practioners view as The Forest combines, music, dance, light and sound create piece that is excitig and imaginative for children. It even features real trees as part of the set!

Here's some background to the piece:

The Forest takes as its starting point the idea that forests are mythical places of transformation, in which time is experienced as an endless cycle of growth, change, disappearance and renewal.

The piece is about nature and animals (and the idea of becoming an animal); about scale, space, and distance; about becoming lost, and wandering, finding a path, and travelling through.

Like a forest, it contains many points of view, is full of movement, rhythm, texture, sound and sensuality. Like a forest, it is complex, strange and beautiful, and a place of heightened perception and of surprise.

The themes of forests, nature and animals are at the heart of fairy tales, folklore and are both familiar and emotive for children 5 and over. The production has been created through extensive research with children to create a piece that will engage, challenge and inspire children and their families/carers.

Running Time 45 minutes.

Hi Creatives,

Last week we blogged about the fantastic training opportunity we are offering to professionals and students in the performing arts under the banner of The Hijinx Residencies.  In a nutshell we're hosting a series of week-long workshops ('residencies') in Cardiff which will be given by top theatre companies including Complicite, Frantic Assembly, Spymonkey, Cardboard Citizens and more.

We are now taking bookings for the very first residency; an improvisation course led by hot Cambridge-based theatre company Hoipolloi from 19 to 30 March 2012.  Thanks to support from Arts Council of Wales, we can offer places at the bargainous price of £100 for one week or £160 for both.  Here are the details:

Hoipolloi: 19 - 30 March 2012

Improvisation course led by Hoipolloi Associate Director Stefanie Mueller

Fee: one week £100/both weeks £160

http://www.hoipolloi.org.uk/

Week One - Getting it Wrong

Through discovering how wonderfully rich and amusing mistakes can be, we learn to worry less about getting things wrong. One of the most interesting moments watching an improviser, is the brief ‘not knowing’ before he/she takes a leap to gain footing again. Through exercises we will learn to enjoy this brief void as a performer and trust that we will land on the other side- regardless where this might be.

Week Two - Embody the Other

In contrast to starting with yourself as a base, we will aim to ‘embody the other’ as a channel for improvising.  We will explore a variety of exercises to distance ourselves from our own physicality in order to discover another state of being. New impulses will guide us and we will therefore find other responses in improvisations.  We will hopefully surprise ourselves and others by this new found freedom.

NB, these are two separate interlinked courses.  You can apply to do either week one, or week two or both. Our preference will be for participants who are able to do both weeks.

To apply for a place on the Hoipolloi course email ben.pettitt-wade@hijinx.org.uk or call 02920 300331.  Places are limited though so you need to be quick!

Don't forget to check out our first blog for full details of the Hijinx Residencies programme, and the group 'Hijinx Residencies' on NTW for the latest news.
