Workshop opportunity with Brazilian site-specific company – Grupo XIX de Teatro

On the 9th of July 2012 NTW will welcome Brazilian theatre makersGrupo XIX de Teatro.

They will spend a week with us and are keen to find out as much as possible about NTW, Theatre and Wales.  They will be exploring Wales & interesting spaces across Wales, watching theatre shows/ events and delivering workshops across Wales.

They would like to deliver some workshops and we thought it would be great to have a Youth Arts group take up this workshop opportunity.  So if you are interested in taking part in the workshop please get in touch ASAP.

The workshop will take place at the latter end of the week so Friday 13th or Saturday 14th July 2012.  Please indicate which day would be best for you.

We would also like for the group to suggest possible sites where the workshop could take place.  If you know of any interesting spaces which may be disused but are safe to access then suggest it!

Get in touch ASAP:

Hi All I was away last week and didn't get a chance to type up minutes from meeting, will get this completed ASAP.

Chelsey has set up a Facebook group as discussed.

Has anyone seen this Dylan Thomas 100 ACW funding info, could this be a focus for the festival? perhaps we could make a group application?

Notes from the Youth Theatre Practitioner’s Day at Sherman Cymru

YC Harriet Hopkins

YC Chelsey Gillard

The Youth Theatre Practitioners met on Saturday 3rd March with aims to:

  • Learn who’s out there, and what they all do
  • Explore and share best practice
  • Look for a way forward, together for the benefit of Youth Theatre as a whole

Best Practice

Sharing best practice is something that most Youth Theatres do within their own groups/companies. Today, it was made clear that expanding beyond this was worthwhile.

I thought it was a really important day for practitioners to come together and share their practice. YC Chelsey Gillard

Starting with ’The Suitcase’ -

A tool kit picked up by Miranda Ballin from Valley’s Kids, The Suitcase is a versatile exercise that gives practitioners the ability to explore the relationships between an object, a person, and the space within which we see them. This exercise enables the story to be created by the students, making them consider heavily the relationships between a person and objects, or locations. Through exploration of these elements of story, they are able to create their own stories, piecing it together bit by bit, as the facilitator imparts small snippets of information.

A valuable tool that was well received by all.

I really enjoyed 'The Suitcase' workshop, I think it would help people of all ages develop their creativity in terms of their imagination, spacial awareness and would also be helpful to develop logical thinking. As it was based in hard research it was encouraging to see how drama can and does have a positive impact on people's lives. YC Chelsey Gillard

Working Bilingually

This section explored exercises and games that can be played to introduce the Welsh language into Youth Theatre workshops etc.

Anna ap Robert works with a diverse range of people, in a variety of age ranges, from fluent Welsh speakers, to those who don't speak a word. She uses bilingual games and exercises in order to develop and cross cultural backgrounds. As a group, we tried out many of these, including using the room and responding to welsh commands to group together (i.e. number of people in groups, body parts, colours for hair or clothes items), or throwing imaginary items to one another in a circle, whilst stating in Welsh what those items are (e.g. 'Small red ball').

These were easy, fun and educational! It was easy to imagine how this would be a far more functional way to learn the language, rather than sit in a classroom and learn from worksheets!

Iwan Brioc  focused on visualisation, and visual art to tackle the subject of the Welsh language, and 'being Welsh'. When hearing the buzz words (like Britain, Wales, Cymru, Welsh speaking...), we had to think of an image, then create it with our bodies.

This was extended through the use of associated sounds, and also matching up with those who we related to, and those whose images were the opposite to ours.

These exercises encouraged the group to consider how they felt about being Welsh, and their relationship with the language. It brought out a lot of emotions, both good and surprising.

The bilingual workshop was really interesting because it made me more aware of how I perceive my own national identity and Wales. I would love to learn Welsh through these kind of practical activities because I think it would be much more effective than sitting down with a textbook. YC Chelsey Gillard

Discussion

The session ended with a discussion of what was exciting about Youth Theatre (empowering individuals, building confidence, creating exciting experiences for youths), what the most challenging elements were (funding, pre-conceptions of outsiders, engaging the children, keeping up with their flow of ideas and keeping them interested), and then evaluating both of these, and looking at ways to move forward with future Youth Theatre Practitioners events, to ensure a continual flow of information, sharing of best practice, and the creation of a true community for practitioners.

The day was clearly a long awaited event that helped to breach the gap between those running and delivering to Youth Theatre

groups in different areas. The outcomes were all very positive, and it was easy to feel that a community is already started to come together.

It will be exciting to see what the next steps are, and where it takes Youth Theatre in South Wales.

The plenary session was really helpful because it helped everyone realise what they love about working with young people but also let them share the difficulties they face and let them know everyone faces the same problems. It seemed that everyone agreed that working with young people was about developing their confidence and social skills and the smallest thing such as a pupil saying thank you in Welsh can be the biggest reward. YC Chelsey Gillard

Hi Everyone, I really loved meeting and working with you all the other week. Am excited about taking this forward and will ensure the notes from the session I facilitated are written up next week. Sorry it hasn't happened sooner, we have been on tour with a show but seeing the wonderful documentation from the young critics has shamed me. Huge thank you to everyone for their contributions. It feels good to have taken another step forward to share practise, network, expand ideas and horizons and ultimately improve our offer to young people in Wales by doing so.
