Yes, read it Kaite.

You might note that under the 'Production' paragraph, new writing is noticeable only by it's absence.

It suggests new writing is a developmental activity for the Sherman Cymru.

Tim - if you read the document 'Information for applicants' you will find this:

'Artistic Development

Sherman Cymru is the premier focus of new writing for the theatre in Wales, offering a diverse range of developmental opportunities for new and established playwrights. A national initiative, Spread the Word/Gair ar Led concludes in 2013, having helped develop the work of seventy-five writers. Core development activity includes ScriptSlam - an entry point for new voices - writer’s courses, Advanced Writers Groups, performance projects and focus events. The Company continues to be committed to supporting, developing and promoting new writing and anticipates deepening relationships with key producing companies (e.g. National Theatre Wales, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Torch Theatre) in terms of strategic development in this area.

Alongside this commitment to new writing lies the aim of creating opportunities for Wales-based artists and creative practitioners to benefit from Sherman Cymru’s resources and to contribute to the theatre’s artistic development.'

It seems the Sherman Cymru is finally stepping away from new writing.

Not once, in the job description for the new artistic director, is new writing mentioned.

How can the Sherman Cymru be ACW funded to produce new writing, and not mention it once in a job description?

Looking forward to seeing Dirty protest in action in London over the weekend with plays in a bag. Been wanting to see their work for ages.

There's a great offer here from The Egg, in Bath.

If you are interested in making theatre for young audiences, definitely worth getting in touch.

More info below:

The egg theatre seeks writers and theatre-makers for a new three-year writing and dramaturgy scheme

The egg theatre has received funding from The Leverhulme Trust to develop a specialist Arts Scholarship programme over the next three years. Between 2013 and 2015 the egg theatre will offer 5 Arts Scholarships per annum to talented artists and theatre-makers, providing space and time for ideas to flourish as well as a strategy for developing skills in making work for young audiences.

This sounds like a fantastic project from our friends at the Royal Court! Do have a look at some of the work that's already been submitted and pop something over to them if inspiration strikes!!

More info from their literary office below...

For the next few weeks the Royal Court is looking for Found Plays – overheard conversations, arresting tannoy announcements, magazine articles that read like an argument… It’s possibly easier to look at the examples than it is to describe them, but we want people to find and frame dramatic moments for us. There are full details on the website about how to submit, and guidelines about what writers might look for, but we also want to be surprised by the form! The plays which are selected will be displayed on the website around the Royal Court building in a variety of ways, and we’re particularly interested in finding plays which are fully or partially in languages other than English. The plays can be submitted via email, post or by phoning our Lost and Found Plays Line on 0800 756 9597.

Thinking more about the comment Kenneth made, re-the policy of writers making texts as an integral part of a theatre company's development, and my own comment, below, about that solo writer's process, prior to a company's involvement.... I think it would be fascinating to have some further discussions/sharings about these kind of processes - ie, the development that happens when the words are finding themselves, evolving into a script - and then the development that happens to the emerging script when it becomes collaborative, working with director, actors, scenographers, etc... There are so many different models, of course - writers working with devising actors from day one; the different input the creative team can bring when in a worksop/ development rehearsal process; working 'alone' with a dramaturg, etc etc... I myself went through two very different experiences working on 'In Water...' The initial 'commissioning' process which I led, trying to work out what the content and form and aesthetics might be and how to express this in words - and then the fantastic experience of exploring this with further development that came about from working with the whole creative team - actors, director, choreographers, designer, etc etc-.... I think we don't discuss enough the possible myriad developmental processes a script may go through from the initial concept to production - perhaps there's some things to be shared, or exploded/demystified here...?
