WalesLab information

WalesLab was NTW's initiative for supporting emerging artists and new ideas for performance. This is a group and discussion forum for those artists involved in WalesLab or those interested in learning more about the various projects under development.

WalesLab consisted of:

Summercamp:

A summer camp for up to twenty theatre makers and artists of varied experience to share ideas, learn form each other and stimulate new collaborations and projects (watch the video below to find out more).

WalesLab projects -

Small groups working for around 1-2 weeks based somewhere in Wales.

Germinate:    Three times a year small groups of artists will be offered the opportunity to spend around two weeks somewhere in Wales developing an idea or project which they have already begun working on, and will share their work with a local audience. There will be three Germinate projects a year, one of which will have an international element.

WalesLab is no longer open for new submissions. Have a look at the 'Your Work' page on the NTW website to find out about how to share your ideas with the company.

INVITATION TO FREE PERFORMANCE AND FEEDBACK EVENING, WED 18TH NOV, CARDIFF

My colleague and I have created a music theatre piece which we have toured to small regional venues on and off for two years, but we have decided we need to make some changes. To help us do that we have organised a performance and feedback night in Cardiff on 18th November specifically for an invited audience of theatre makers and creative minds. We would like to invite you as people who can give us useful feedback, and crucially who will not just tell us what we want to hear. We are looking for honest, objective critique in the spirit of development. Almost like a focus group for the show!

On this occasion the tickets will be free; your feedback will be payment. The show will start at 7.30pm, running until around 9pm including a short interval, and then we will join the audience in a discussion of the show, asking specific questions, and taking feedback, for anything up to an hour. This will give us the opportunity to really zone in on what could be improved.
We did apply for the Scratch season at The Other Room that has just taken place, but were told the piece was too developed for that. What we have is a full show; we just want to sharpen its teeth and shine its boots. We want the audience to feel both amusement and unease; we would love you to help us achieve the perfect balance of those feelings. There is a saying that many hands make light work. We believe that many heads make good work!

Aside from the obvious benefits to us and our show that your feedback will provide, we are also keen to nurture the spirit of community within the arts in Cardiff. We hope that the evening will be an enjoyable and stimulating opportunity for discourse, for all who attend.
The venue for the evening will be Little Man Coffee Co., the management team of which is very supportive of this kind of local creative interaction.
The show itself, Behind the Blinds, is a series of darkly comic songs in the vein of Tim Minchin performed by a married couple, gradually revealing more and more about their neighbours and themselves.
The bar will open all evening for wine, beer and free popcorn!

In a nutshell:

What? Behind The Blinds
When? Wed 18th November, 7.30pm
Where? Little Man Coffee Co., Bridge Street, Cardiff
Who? Isabelle Paige and Richard Watson
Why? Development. Fun. POPCORN.

If you are able to attend, it would be great if you could RSVP via email to isabellepaige@hotmail.co.uk by 6th November. That way we can assess numbers and invite more people if required. We are not advertising the performance publicly because of the very specific nature of the evening. We feel like the optimum number of people for the focus group is around 25; more than that might be difficult to facilitate, and less won't feel like a full audience. So if you could let us know your intentions that would be very helpful. You are very welcome to bring friends but again please let us know by 6th November.
We very much hope you can make it!

Warm wishes,
Isabelle Paige

Company Workshop with Award Winning Familia de la Noche Theatre

Award Winning Company Familia de la Noche are running a company workshop at Chapter Arts Centre on Tuesday 24th November, running alongside performances their 5* show The Greatest Liar in all the World.

A bit about the Company:  We are an emerging theatre company based in Carmarthenshire. We have been working in Wales for the past 3 years. We are a mixture of actors, dancers, puppeteers, clowns and musicians who are all worked extensively nationally and internationally. We have had several successful runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2013, 2014 and 2015 getting 5* reviews for our 2 current shows The Greatest Liar in all the World and The Very Grey Matter of Edward Blank. We were awarded the Blysh Commission by WMC in 2014 and at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival we were awarded the ThreeWeeks Editors Award for our "consistently outstanding" work.

About the Workshop: The workshop is a chance for you to meet the company and for us to meet you. We’ll look at the way which we make our shows and have a muck about with clowning, physical theatre and puppetry. The workshop will run from 3pm to 5pm on Tuesday 24th November. Tickets are £15. Space is limited so to register your interest or find out more get in touch with Becca – Becca@familiadelanoche.com

We’d love to see you there.

Waleslab Artists met and collaborated in Japan!!!

Clare Parry-Jones, a Welsh Performing Artist, visited Japan in March - April 2015. We, Underground Airport, supported her research into Japanese culture, particularly regarding Washi (Japanese Paper) and Mizuko-kuyo (reposing of the soul of an unborn child). She also led a Clown workshop with Japanese actors.

And finally, Clare and Underground Airport decided to create a performance for Japan. She created paper sculptures of human bodies, as a symbol of the life (both human and environmental) lost in Japan after the Fukushima nuclear incident. And we introduced the place, Enoshima, in Kanazawa prefecture. Enoshima has a myth of a brutal dragon and a goddess.

This project is funded by the Arts Council of Wales.
And also, special thanks to Waleslab project of National Theatre Wales!!!!!!!!
