Shadow Warriors – Devising in the Dark

Our team of ex-miners know

their own historic pathways out of the dark. How might an audience find their

own way into the dark and back into the light through a world of concrete,

hydraulics and acoustics, which is usually hidden from the coach parties and

casual strollers of Wales Millennium Centre?

Backstage craftsmen help

us turn glitter to…

Congratulations Michael and Bill

Huge congrats to Michael Sheen and Bill Mitchell on their Best Director award for NTW13 The Passion at the UK Theatre Awards.  We are all thrilled for them and very proud.  We reckon there should also have been a special award for Best Town in a New Production - for Port Talbot.  Here's what the Guardian had to say.

Artist residency in Brazil!

We had a visit from Jorge Lopes Ramos last week from Zecora Ura, whose Hotel Medea was one of the undoubted hits of the Edinburgh Fringe, and which Abdul and I had seen in previous incarnations in London.

I've posted details of a residency his company are running in Brazil next year below or you can find more details at…

Opportunity to present new performance work in Bristol

I thought this might be of interest to anyone working in the live art/ performance/ installations area:

Bristol Live Open Platform (BLOP) returns in February 2012 to sweep away those winter blues and hurl us forward into a maelstrom of performance, live art, installations, actions and one off encounters. The call out is now open for artists wishing to propose a work to show at the platform which will be hosted at Arnolfini on 25 Feb 2012. Last…

At Home

It must be the water or something. But I totally relax amongst those friendly people of Rhayader. Even after a couple of beers dressed up like fools the go for the conversation. Who are you? What are you doing here? How long are you going to stay? AAAAAAh your an artist? What are your plans? You need a place to stay? OK, come over. We'll have a tea. You might help out with the apples. Scrumping? OK? OK!…

Poetry and the Land

An inspiring day on Friday visiting Gillian Clarke on her farm near Aberaeron.  We talked of 'poetry and the land' as key to Welsh artistic tradition - and to our work at NTW.  We raised a cup of coffee to Kaite O'Reilly and Owen Sheers - examples of how poetry and theatre can step with a bold iambic foot into each others' worlds.  And we talked about young farmers in West Wales and young rappers on the streets of Cardiff and Manchester keeping poetry alive through the thrill of out-rhyming…

National Theatre Wales- 'The Village Social' review

Because beneath even the most respectable exterior will lurk some strange impulse, some irrational craving, some inappropriate imagining.’

This is National Theatre Wales’s first visit to Neath Little Theatre, and it seems the whole community has turned out to witness the event. Following a highly successful Edinburgh Fringe with their devised piece ‘The Dark Philosophers’, National Theatre Wales return to their homeland with a surreal musical theatre piece. Created by…

At Home

Trying to get a grasp of Rhayader? I am in it. People are friendly. They drink and party. And tell lots of good stories. We walked down the river for a while, Alan (my host for the moment) and I. We went to the Lion Royal Hotel and had a good conversation with the owner, Mary Rowland (If I remember it correctly). She invited me to come and stay later on in the month. So I can attend and serve at a party in the Hotel! And sometimes when it rains I take the car out for a spin. It spins good on…

At Home

This morning I am moving to a new adress. My new home is in Churchstreet. It is good to change. Alan is my new 'guide' of Rhayader. We walk along the river Wye and he tells me lot's of beautiful stories. They are very inspiring and point out to me that I really have to go and see Mike Pearson. While talking to Alan and walking we can just see the beautiful option of making a chorography around the river. It all comes down to a sentence engraved in the former pool next to the river; 'children…

The Shadow Warriors

We are half way through our research time working with ex miners from Big Pit.

The ingredients and connections we had are somehow starting to generate a coherent world.

From Monday Chris, John, James, Pete, Gerald and Alan from Big Pit, the Mynyddislwyn Male Choir and me will brave the Donald Gordon stage...in the dark. Here is a short video before we get swallowed by the black…

At Home

This morning I woke up so relaxed!!! O my ..... this is becoming a holiday. Or? It has been sad to me that the air here is good for ya. And that the quality of the sleep is improved by it. Well, good for me!

I met up with Jade in her beauty parlor, with Alan in the office of The Arches, with some sheep in the hills and ended up eating indian food in front of the tellie (sic?). And I think I saw a Gorilla!!…

At Home

Of course it would be better to introduce what I am doing in Rhayader. And who I am and what it means that the NTW invites the Dutch 'PeerGrouP' over to research possible ideas for a play. But I am out the house continuesly talking to people. I think we are lucky that I am allowed on the internet quite often.

My second day at the Cox's is another good one. Maybe you good check my facebook as well. More pictures there. In the meantime I wander around the village and try to climb a hill…

At Home

Arriving in Rhayader is something. Driving on the left is another thing. But I managed. I was invited by the family Cox to stay at their house as long as I want. I did think about it because they are extremely friendly and I think I fit in quit nicely. Very good converations about theatre and life.

The first evening we, Cath Cox and I, went to a clairvoyants night in the village. Have fun reading!…

100, 1000, 1 000 000 Stories Festival Bucharest

I arrive in Romania at 7am for the Assitej International Festival for Children which is now in it's seventh year and organised by Teatrul Ion Creanga, the Childrens's Theatre in Bucharest.

I am met at the airport by one of the company members and whisked off to the hotel, having not eaten since lunch time the day before (no-one mentioned that Luton virtually closes for the night) and not being one for a kip on the plane, too excited, I am keen to eat and get showered and changed. Why…

Barefoot in the Park - back on from tonight. Crwys Presyterian Church Richmond Rd

Thanks to an amazing bunch of die hard theatre makers - the show will go on!! So corney I love it!

So although most of the crew feel like our heads haven't touched the pillow for the last week or so and we are drowning again in a sea of cardboard - we have transformed a new venue ( it's an actual working theatre - which is a little strange for me but I kind of like it in a quaint way).

I would just like to say a huge thank you to all at Mandan Productions for…
