Two Days to Explore and Discover at Drift

One of my favourite experiences of Edinburgh 2011 was Hotel Medea - an overnight re-imagining of the Medea story with a strong Brazilian flavour.  I'd promised to go months previously when I'd met one of the directors - Jorge Lopes Ramos - at an event in Cardiff, but I have to admit, when I turned up at the Summerhall venue at midnight at the end of a long day seeing shows, the idea of being stuck in a performance for the next six hours didn't feel like a good idea at all.  At the sight of…

Storytelling and Game

A fabulous talk from Margaret Robertson on games and storytelling. She explores how stories are told through game and how they can exist beyond the video screen. The possibilities are endless when we look at 'cross pollinating' games with the world around us by utilising technological complexity and enhancement. The idea of players becoming collaborators rather than simply being an audience is at the heart of the work we do at yello…

Scurlock 11 - democracy in action

I am currently speed writing as I am about to be thrown out, not literally, of my local library computer room as there is a computer class starting here in the next ten minutes.

But I shall not complain. Most libraries were set up by subscriptions of ordinary working men and women who wanted a public educational resourse for the whole community. Can't afford a book, play etc? go to the library. Want that library shut down and replaced by a coffee shop or car park? Vote…

New bar gets go ahead at Harlech Court

On Friday 19th October the Council gave the approval for a new licensed premises in one of Cardiff’s renowned buildings, Harlech Court.

The new Company Porter’s has two directors - Dave (Wilson) is the Director of Actorsworkshop. Dan (Porter) has just retired as an actor (his greatest triumph coming as ‘the fat one’ in a series of commercials for the UK’s No. 1 Lager).

Dan hopes this leap from one ridiculous…

Less than ninety seconds long.

Scurlock 10 - Writer's Block?

You sit. You open the A4 refill pad you just bought especially from ‘notepads anonymous’, knowing you've got cupboards bursting with notepads of various sizes. You stare at the blank page. You look around at the people chatting away about grandsons, leggings, vim and pneumonia and you look back at the page. Stretch the arms behind the head. Shake the writing hand pretentiously as if you’re about to write Wales’ answer to Tolstoy’s War and Peace. Nothing. You sit. You stare.

A word,…

Theatre Workshop with Mathilde Lopez on Friday

Took part in the Mathilde's extraordinary workshop at Chapter yesterday - an absolutely amazing experience! Despite getting up at 4am to catch the first cold train from Prestatyn to Cardiff - and then being in an information vacuum at Chapter Arts for 2 hours - it was more than worthwhile... I learned more about theatre in a few short hours than I could ever have imagined possible.

I had no idea, absolutely no idea, what the day would be like. I didn't expect to have to physically… Continue

Farewell NTW

Feeling like a playwright who passes in the night, my week at NTW is up already and although I haven't seen the inside of a castle (a novelty for an Australian), I feel like I have had the opportunity to see inside a couple of Welsh minds, no less impressive edifices. The group at NTW have been incredibly generous with their time and ideas - I have had the privilege of being included in many of the meetings that John and others have attended throughout the week, been inspired by the true spirit… Continue

Beautiful Burnout

Waiting to go in and see the Beautiful Burnout; I quickly read the narrative and general backgroud behind the production to find out more about what I was about to see.

Firstly It follows five young fighters as they aim for the bright lights, the play focuses on a guy called Cameron Burns who's fighting for his club and mother.

My interpretation before going in was the above pretty much. I knew it was a play about a boxer trying to fight his way to the top and it…

Week 4 Training with British Improvisation Theatre

Hi, I’m running Improv as a part of NTW TEAM from Nov 6th, and have been attending a different Improvisation course in Bristol run by the lovely Tristan Hancock in order to get a bit of a refresh.

Week 4, Thursday 25th October

This week seems to be a lot quicker sum up, and I think it’s good that as the session go on we are able to spend more time on fewer exercises. We began by doing a scene from Chekhov’s The Bear, which threw us all a…
